I so agree with your concern- I do like reading books on my eReader, so I’d probably make an exception for that- the ability to highlight, particularly for nonfiction, has become essential to me. But the random reading of little scraps of things online can be quite a rabbit hole. I’ve found using a service like Instapaper / Pocket / Readwise Reader has helped a LOT. Instead of reading the long article on the actual site in the moment, I save it to my reader, and read it later if it’s still on my mind. This might be a good way to save things you feel the pull to read this month? But it seems like you’ll have the experience I have- that by the time I go to the reader, the interest has waned and I’m far less likely to take the time to read every article I’ve saved- just the ones I’m most compelled by.

Good luck with the challenge! I look forward to hearing your discoveries.

Thanks! I've used Pocket in the past, and found I had a big list of articles to read which I never bothered looking at afterwards. But maybe, like you say, it's a good way to defer the temptation of reading everything on the spot, and to triage what is worthwhile after giving it some time and space. I do miss reading on my eReader, but it's been nice to go back to paper for a while. I'll be sending updates soon!
